Domestic Violence Safety Planning: First Steps Toward Safety, Healing, and Freedom

Living with domestic violence, narcissistic abuse, or controlling behavior can leave you feeling uncertain about what to do next. You may be thinking about leaving, trying to understand what is happening, or simply looking for ways to feel safer. Wherever you are today, remember that your journey is personal. There is no single path or timeline that is right for everyone.

A domestic violence safety plan can help you think ahead and prepare for situations that may become unsafe. Safety planning does not mean that you have decided to leave. It simply means considering your options and identifying steps that may help protect you and the people you care about.

Recognize the Warning Signs

One of the first steps in domestic violence safety planning is learning to recognize behaviors that may signal increasing danger. Abuse can include physical violence, threats, intimidation, stalking, financial control, isolation, emotional abuse, coercive control, and monitoring your activities or communications.

Narcissistic abuse and controlling behavior can also leave someone questioning their own judgment. Learning about patterns of abuse may help you better understand what you are experiencing and make informed decisions about your safety.

Identify People You Can Trust

If it is safe, consider identifying one or two people you trust. This might be a family member, friend, neighbor, coworker, advocate, or another persona who will listen without judgement.

You may want to establish a simple code word or phrase that lets someone know you need help without having to explain the situation. Think about who you could contact in an emergency and where you might be able to go if you needed to leave quickly.

Keep Important Information Accessible

When it is safe to do so, consider how you could access important documents and information in an emergency. These might include identification, birth certificates, financial information, insurance information, medications, important phone numbers, and documents for your children and pets.

Every situation is different. If gathering or storing documents could increase your risk, your immediate safety should come first.

Consider the Safety of Children and Pets

Abuse can affect everyone in a household, including children and pets. Thinking about their safety can be an important part of deciding what steps are right for you. Every situation is different, and you should never feel pressured to make a decision before you are ready.

You Deserve Support

Domestic violence and narcissistic abuse can leave a person feeling isolated, confused, and uncertain about the future. You do not have to have everything figured out today.

Sometimes the first step is simply learning more about what you are experiencing. Other times, it may be finding someone you trust, exploring available resources, or beginning to think about what a safer future could look like.

There is no single timeline for healing or moving forward.
